Buildings which require less energy to run are not only much better for the wallet, but also are much more beneficial to the environment as the global climate change conference, COP21, which took place in Paris in late November showed.

22% reduction in COemissions

The paper published at the COP21 revealed that “BREEAM assessed buildings achieve an average 22% reduction in COemissions compared to buildings designed to regulatory minimum performance requirements. BREEAM Excellent buildings save more than 30% and Outstanding rated buildings in excess of 50%.” This huge reduction in CO2 emissions by BREEAM assessed buildings will ensure that 2016 sees a rise in the number of companies applying for assessment.

Buildings and homes account for over 40% of the UK’s total carbon emissions

The Director of BREEAM, Gavin Dunn, stated "Given that buildings and homes together account for over 40% of the UK’s total carbon emissions, it’s more important than ever that standards like BREEAM are used to reduce emissions and running costs over the lifetime of a building.".

You’re going to be left behind

The more attention world leaders give to climate change, the more changes are going to be made on this subject. The need to reduce carbon emissions in as many places as possible is going to massively increase, and this will more and more come down to the individual. It will eventually mean that if you don’t have a sustainability standard like BREEAM on your building or home you’re going to be left behind.
