How Trees Could Save The Climate Header

It’s to no surprise that the current climate and its ever-changing ways is always a top discussion within todays society. With the likes of commuting green, increase in recycling and the encouragement of the use of renewable energies, unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’d know it’s a hot topic and extremely important.

With the current climate, earth could support 4.4 billion hectares of continuous tree cover. There is currently 2.8 billion hectares of existing tree cover. Therefore, there are 1.6 billion hectares less than there could potentially be. This is a prime example of the additional steps that could be taken to improve our planet.

The importance of educating others about climate change cannot be overstated in our modern society. There are several platforms for us to utilize in order to spread important climate news, statistics and small steps that everybody can take in order to create a huge impact.

As Vincent Van Gogh once said, “Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.”

Did you know that scientists have calculated that under current conditions 0.9 billion hectares of land worldwide would be suitable for reforestation, which could ultimately capture 2/3 of human-made carbon emissions once mature? This equates to the size of the USA!

As it stands, of the 1.6 billion hectares, 0.9 billion hectares is land that is not currently being used by humans, so could be replanted. This figure excludes deserts, agricultural and urban areas and current forest.

The image below demonstrates the land currently available for replanting:
