Primary School, Wyton-on-the-Hill
Encon Associates were commissioned by the construction company RG Carter as part of their Framework Agreement to deliver new build schools in Cambridgeshire to work alongside Boston Saunders Architects on this Design & Build project for a new £9.3m Primary School.

Working on behalf of the Cambridgeshire County Council, an application was granted planning permission to rebuild and expand the Wyton Primary School, increasing its size by purchasing land from the Ministry of Defence, and adding a pre-school on the site which is located close to RAF Wyton.
Much of the fabric of the old school dates back to the 1960s, with some more modern additions made in 2003 which meant the school had many problems relating to maintenance, condition and the suitability of the accommodation which was the driver behind the rebuild.
The Solution
A public consultation took place and was attended by more than 50 residents, who were given the opportunity to view the plans and have a say.
The sustainable and contemporary design of the new school makes a positive contribution to the surrounding environment, responding to the clients’ key aspirations, reflecting the rural setting, history and ethos of a family-orientated village school.
The formal and informal curriculum is enhanced by the quality of the architecture and landscape to provide a positive learning environment. External spaces built into the design allow children to socially interact in an adaptable and flexible environment.

The Official Opening
The school is now opened with an extra 100 pupils on the student roll. The opening ceremony including the official cutting of the ribbon by Cambridgeshire Council officials, was attended by members of the design team, pupils and teachers.
Head Teacher, Jo Phillips said “We are delighted with our new building and very grateful to all those at Cambridgeshire County Council who were involved in its planning and construction. The school is much more than just a building to us: it is a light, airy space in which everyone feels valued and valuable – a place where learning is not just the order of the day, but a real pleasure to be part of. It’s the school our children and our community have long-awaited and long-deserved.”
