Understanding Noise Impact Assessments

What is a Noise Impact Assessment?

A Noise Impact Assessment (NIA) evaluates sound levels within a specific environment to determine their impact on human health and the surrounding environment. The process includes measuring existing noise levels, identifying primary noise sources, and addressing potential effects on nearby residents or workers.

These assessments are an essential planning requirement for sites where noise could pose challenges for occupants and the surrounding community, such as those near transport links or entertainment venues.

What is a Noise Management Plan?

A Noise Management Plan (NMP) outlines strategies for controlling and reducing the noise impacts associated with a development during construction and operation. These plans are often required for projects in high-noise environments or where ongoing noise emissions need to be carefully managed to comply with Local Authority regulations. If you’re working towards BREEAM certification, Noise Impact Assessments and Noise Management Plans can also aid you in achieving vital credits for Hea 05 and Pol 05.

Our Noise Impact Assessment service

The Encon Associates approach to Noise Impact Assessments

Our comprehensive noise assessment and acoustic consultancy services cover a wide range of noise-sensitive projects, from residential and commercial developments to industrial and infrastructure sites.

We combine on-site noise monitoring with advanced modelling software to assess the potential impacts of noise on future building occupants, workers, and surrounding communities. We can also test the airborne and impact sound transmission between partitions to ensure acoustic privacy between spaces.

We then collaborate with your design team to develop robust Noise Management Plans that help mitigate these impacts. Potential noise control solutions could include installing sound barriers or improving building insulation. These plans are vital for demonstrating compliance with Local Authority noise requirements and maintaining an acceptable acoustic environment for those in the vicinity.

Frequently asked questions about Noise Impact Assessments

Want to know more about the benefits of Noise Impact Assessments?

A Noise Impact Assessment is required for developments near transport links, entertainment venues, or other high-noise environments. It is also necessary for all residential, commercial, or industrial projects that are expected to generate significant noise emissions.

The process involves a combination of on-site noise monitoring and predictive computer modelling to assess potential noise disturbances. This data can then be used to guide mitigation strategies.
Potential noise mitigation measures could include the installation of acoustic barriers, improvements to building insulation, and adjustments to the site layout. These methods help to minimise noise disruption for occupants and the surrounding community.
Noise Impact Assessments provide evidence-based reports that can be used to demonstrate compliance with Local Authority noise requirements and support planning approvals. These reports can also reduce the risk of future noise complaints.
Noise Impact Assessments play a crucial role in achieving BREEAM credits under Hea 05 (Acoustic Performance) and Pol 05 (Noise Pollution). These assessments ensure that buildings provide acceptable noise levels for occupants, while also minimising environmental noise pollution.
