Understanding Air Quality Assessments & Indoor Air Quality

What is an Air Quality Assessment?

An Air Quality Assessment (AQA) evaluates the presence of pollutants in the air to determine their impact on human health and the environment. This involves measuring pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), particulate matter (PM10 & PM2.5), carbon monoxide (CO), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

AQAs are often required for planning applications, particularly in areas with existing air pollution concerns.

What is Indoor Air Quality testing?

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) refers to the quality of air inside buildings and how it affects occupant health and wellbeing. Good Indoor Air Quality is a crucial concern for homes, schools and workplaces, as it helps to prevent respiratory and cardiovascular issues for building users. As well as reducing health risks, IAQ assessments support compliance with planning conditions and environmental regulations such as BREEAM.

Our Air Quality Assessment & Indoor Air Quality services

The Encon Associates approach to Air Quality Assessments

Our robust Air Quality Assessments are specifically designed to meet stringent local planning and environmental requirements.

We begin by conducting pollution dispersion modelling and construction dust and emissions monitoring to assess the air quality impacts of new developments. We can also produce Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) to report on the air quality within large-scale commercial or residential projects. All of this ensures your project is best placed to obtain planning permission.

Indoor Air Quality Assessments

We can also assist developers in completing Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) assessments for compliance with BREEAM Hea 02 criteria. Our specialists identify and mitigate poor Indoor Air Quality conditions that affect human health, including the presence of VOC and formaldehyde pollutants. We also offer advice on appropriate ventilation and filtration systems to improve airflow within a building, helping to foster much healthier indoor environments.

Frequently asked questions about Air Quality Assessments

Want to know more about the benefits of Air Quality Assessments?
An Air Quality Assessment is typically required when a development has the potential to impact local air quality. They may be needed in areas with existing pollution concerns, or for projects that will introduce new emissions.
Indoor Air Quality can significantly affect occupant health and wellbeing. By identifying and reducing exposure to harmful pollutants, Indoor Air Quality testing can prevent respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, thereby safeguarding public health.
An Air Quality Assessment provides in-depth data on current air pollution levels and the potential impacts of development. It also suggests any mitigation measures required to meet planning requirements and regulatory standards.
BREEAM has a dedicated criteria for Indoor Air Quality (Hea 02). Credits are awarded to developers that have assessed and improved Indoor Air Quality through careful pollutant monitoring and ventilation strategies.
Key pollutants that are identified by Air Quality Assessments include nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), particulate matter (PM10 & PM2.5), carbon monoxide (CO), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These pollutants can have detrimental impacts on both human health and the environment.
