Understanding Tree Surveys

What is a Tree Survey?

A Tree Survey is an assessment of trees on or near a development site. It involves evaluating their health, condition, and potential impact on proposed construction projects.

Local authorities often require a Tree Survey for any piece of land that contains existing trees, with or without Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs), as part of the planning application process.

Tree Surveys are typically conducted in accordance with BS5837:2012. They help to identify which trees should be removed before construction begins and which should be retained, with the addition of any appropriate mitigation measures. As well as safeguarding trees, these surveys support biodiversity and contribute to the overall sustainability of a development.

Our Tree Survey service

The Encon Associates approach to Tree Surveys

Our comprehensive Tree Surveys help developers seamlessly integrate trees into site layouts and mitigate unnecessary tree loss.

We begin by conducting a thorough assessment of your site’s existing trees, recording the tree species, dimensions, condition, and Root Protection Areas (RPAs). We can then produce various in-depth documents for submission to the local planning authority, including a Tree Constraints Plan (TCP) and Arboricultural Impact Assessment (AIA).

At Encon Associates, we recognise the importance of engaging with your design and construction teams early on in the project planning phases. We provide strategic tree management solutions to help you effectively safeguard trees during construction and manage public safety risks. We can also advise on potential tree planting and replacement schemes to enhance biodiversity in and around your site. All of this ensures your development is best placed to obtain planning permission.

Frequently asked questions about Tree Surveys

Want to know more about the benefits of Tree Surveys?
A BS5837 Tree Survey is a tree assessment conducted in accordance with British Standard BS5837:2012. It evaluates tree constraints in relation to design, demolition, and construction projects, helping developers to comply with planning regulations.
A Tree Survey is required when a site contains trees that may be affected by development. Local authorities often mandate tree surveys as part of the planning application process to assess tree protection needs.
Tree Surveys help to identify which trees should be retained and which should be removed, ensuring compliance with planning requirements and supporting sustainable site design. They also mitigate the potential risks associated with tree loss and root damage.
If any trees are protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), special permission from the Local Authority is required before any work can be carried out. A Tree Survey provides the necessary data to support planning applications and guide appropriate tree management strategies.
Yes, Tree Surveys play a key role in enhancing biodiversity. They provide valuable insights into tree preservation and replanting requirements, and encourage developers to integrate green infrastructure into site designs.
