BREEAM New Construction v6

What’s new: BREEAM UK New Construction v6

Launched in August 2022, the latest version of BREEAM New Construction V6 reflects key updates in building regulations across the UK.

Designed to align with the latest sustainability goals, BREEAM V6 includes revised criteria for energy efficiency, and health and wellbeing. However, BRE recognises that not all projects in the UK will be following the updated building regulations, so both BREEAM UK New Construction 2018 and BREEAM UK New Construction Version 6 remain open for new registrations. The improvements include:

Enhanced energy performance

BREEAM V6 introduces updated energy performance scales (translator curves) to align with the most recent building regulations across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The methodology for assessing multi-residential buildings and criteria for post-occupancy evaluation of operational energy consumption have also been updated, helping developers to achieve their long-term sustainability targets.

Health & wellbeing updates

Stricter indoor air quality standards have been introduced, including more rigorous ventilation criteria requirements for carbon dioxide sensors in occupied spaces. BREEAM UK New Construction V6 also brings stricter criteria for TVOC targets, down from 500μg/m³ to 300μg/m³. These improvements ensure better air quality and healthier living environments for building occupants.

Frequently asked questions about BREEAM

Want to know more about the benefits of BREEAM certification?
BREEAM stands for Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method. Founded by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in 1990, it has grown into a globally recognised standard and is now used in over 70 countries to assess the sustainability of buildings and infrastructure.
A BREEAM Pre-Assessment is an initial evaluation conducted early in the project planning phase. It helps identify potential sustainability credits and opportunities for improvement, ensuring your project is well-positioned to achieve the best possible BREEAM rating.
Achieving high ratings like ‘Excellent’ or ‘Outstanding’ requires careful planning and early integration of sustainability measures across all nine BREEAM categories. Engaging with a BREEAM Assessor early on in the process and conducting BREEAM pre-assessments will help you achieve your desired rating.
BREEAM certification is not mandatory for all developments. However, many local planning authorities, stakeholders, and clients may require BREEAM certification to demonstrate a building’s commitment to sustainability – particularly for larger commercial and public sector projects.
No, BREEAM is not limited to the UK. While it was originally developed in the UK, BREEAM is now an internationally recognised standard used in over 70 countries worldwide to assess the sustainability of buildings and infrastructure.
