BREEAM UK New Construction v7 vs v6

What’s new: BREEAM UK New Construction v7 vs v6

Set for release in early 2025, BREEAM v7 represents the most significant update to the BREEAM UK New Construction framework since the 2018 version was released. This version aims to further enhance the sustainability and environmental performance of buildings by focusing on whole life carbon and energy credits. Some of the key updates include:
  • A stronger emphasis on measuring and reducing whole life carbon emissions, from construction through to demolition
  • Updated energy credits to promote energy efficiency
  • Changes to carbon measurement metrics to ensure consistency and comparability throughout a building’s life cycle
  • New requirements for embodied carbon benchmark comparisons
  • Focusing on the overall performance of the building rather than the specific processes and metrics used to create it

Many of the specific BREEAM UK New Construction credits from V6 have also been revised. There have been a number of new credits introduced under the health and wellbeing, energy, water, and materials BREEAM categories, such as non-visual effects of light, low carbon design, and installed energy controls. Minimum standards have also been raised for water consumption, refrigerant gas management, and material lifecycle assessments. All of these changes are designed to help streamline the process toward achieving Net Zero and reward buildings for becoming less reliant on fossil fuels.

You can read the full summary of changes for BREEAM New Construction v7 via the official BRE website.

Frequently asked questions about BREEAM

Want to know more about the benefits of BREEAM certification?
BREEAM stands for Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method. Founded by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in 1990, it has grown into a globally recognised standard and is now used in over 70 countries to assess the sustainability of buildings and infrastructure.
A BREEAM Pre-Assessment is an initial evaluation conducted early in the project planning phase. It helps identify potential sustainability credits and opportunities for improvement, ensuring your project is well-positioned to achieve the best possible BREEAM rating.
Achieving high ratings like ‘Excellent’ or ‘Outstanding’ requires careful planning and early integration of sustainability measures across all nine BREEAM categories. Engaging with a BREEAM Assessor early on in the process and conducting BREEAM pre-assessments will help you achieve your desired rating.
BREEAM certification is not mandatory for all developments. However, many local planning authorities, stakeholders, and clients may require BREEAM certification to demonstrate a building’s commitment to sustainability – particularly for larger commercial and public sector projects.
No, BREEAM is not limited to the UK. While it was originally developed in the UK, BREEAM is now an internationally recognised standard used in over 70 countries worldwide to assess the sustainability of buildings and infrastructure.
