Understanding Fitwel
Shaping healthier buildings & communities
Introduced back in 2017 by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and operated by the Center for Active Design (CfAD), Fitwel was developed to ensure that all buildings and communities work together to achieve a shared vision for a healthier future.
The Fitwel framework includes 12 core assessment categories that are all scored against a 3-star rating system. By measuring key areas such as air quality, physical activity, mental health, and community support, Fitwel is redefining the way that we experience buildings by placing health and wellness at the forefront.
Fitwel vs BREEAM
Sustainable building assessments for a greener build
BREEAM measures a commercial building’s environmental performance, whereas Fitwel is more concerned with human health and wellbeing. Fitwel is also a much quicker and easier certification process than BREEAM, taking up to 12 weeks to achieve certification after submission. If you are already pursuing a BREEAM Certification, it becomes much easier to comply with Fitwel credits, enabling you to maximise your projects’ environmental impact and value.
